BEST NEIGHBORHOOD MARKET
Grove Market
242 Forest Ave., Pacific Grove 375-9581
For 40 years, Grove Market has been more than just the well-stocked grocery store around the corner. The friendly folks
on staff are your always-chatty friends, sure-I’ll-spot-you-a-stick-of-butter neighbors, and
personal
culinary consultants rolled into one.
Want well-marbled prime rib for that dinner party you’re having this weekend? Just ask the guys at the meat and deli counter.
Too tired to cook dinner tonight?
Grab a roast chicken and a tub of just-like-homemade potato salad.
Need some recipe ideas?

This year marks
Grove’s 40th year as a destination for cooks preparing
for
special occasions, but the butchers here still do most of their business
on the
day-in and day-out circuit, wrapping chicken, hamburgers and bacon
in
tidy bundles for familiar faces.

The chefs and restaurateurs who frequent Grove Market mid-mornings to
stock
up on produce, or meat or sundries sometimes think of it as a
specialty store.
And why wouldn’t they?
The produce is overwhelmingly local, the meat is trimmed and
cut to order and the supplies of the ice, corn starch or cleaning supplies
seem like
they were stocked just for their needs. That’s the same sense that lends satisfaction to Weekly readers who make Grove Market their choice as
best neighborhood shopping destination. You need it? They’ve got it.
As a bonus, the goods are delivered in an environment peopled by
friendly help, inhabited by chatty neighbors and wrapped up
in a small-town, throwback Mayberry vibe.
Best Butcher Shop» Grove Market
Grove Market is a Norman Rockwell painting come to life.
The surfers love the vibe, the little old ladies love the service,
the hippies love the veggies, the squares love the New York Times,
the politicos love the patrons and everybody loves the butcher shop.
“Love of Meat,” of course, is the title of the 1969 tribute from the famed satirist
Nils Erickson. There once was a man from Nantucket who loved the butchery
at Grove Market. The filets trimmed by hand!
The wieners and lamb!
The appeal was too much—he couldn’t buck it.
