Sport Trivia#5
www.celtics.com

The Celtics came into being on June 6th, 1946. On that day 11 men (all of whom owned either professional hockey teams, large arenas in major cities, or both) met to discuss the formation of a new professional basketball league. They christened the new league the Basketball Association of America and modeled its season - which featured a 60-game schedule and a series of playoffs - after the National Hockey League's. The game itself was based on college basketball, but with the contests lengthened to 48 minutes rather than the 40 played in college.
A driving force behind the BAA was Celtics owner
Walter Brown, who ran the Boston Garden and was part of the NHL's Boston Bruins organization. Brown hired John 'Honey' Russell as his first coach, and the Celtics' maiden home game was played on November 5th, 1946. The contest began an hour behind schedule because Boston's Chuck Connors (later the star of television series 'The Rifleman') splintered a wooden backboard with a practice dunk before the game. Boston lost to the Chicago Stags, 57-55, but the
4,329 fans in attendance not only got to see the Celtics' first-ever home game, but also witnessed the first broken backboard in professional basketball history.

The 49ers entered professional football in 1946 as a founding member of the All-America Football Conference, which was founded in 1946. Had it not been for the Cleveland Browns, a team that won four championships and lost only four games in the league's four years of operation, the 49ers would have been
the AAFC's dominant team. Their four-year record was a 39-15-2. Although San Francisco handed Cleveland two of its four defeats, they still finished second each year. The 49ers were admitted to the NFL in 1950 following the collapse of the AAFC. They came close to a championship only once during their first two decades in the NFL. In 1957, they tied Detroit for the NFL Western division crown but lost in a playoff.

A new era dawned for the 49ers in March 1977 when Edward J. DeBartolo Jr. became the new owner. Bill Walsh, renowned as an offensive specialist, was hired in 1979 as the 49ers head coach. Three seasons later the Niners had their first championship, a 26-21 win over the Cincinnati Bengals in Super Bowl XVI.
San Francisco won the West again in 1983, but saved their best for 1984 That year they won 18 of 19 games, including Super Bowl XIX, in which they beat the Miami Dolphins. Walsh ended his professional coaching career after San Francisco's 20-16 victory over Cincinnati in Super Bowl XXIII. In 10 years as the Niners' coach, Walsh had a 102-62-1 record, won six NFC West titles and three Super Bowls.

The team name, which originates from the 1849 goldrush, was selected as a recognition of the pioneering and adventurous spirit of the men of the 1849 gold rush in the Sierra Nevada mountains east of San Francisco. It is the only name the team has had and San Francisco is the only city in which it has resided. They were the first NFL team to produce 10 or more wins for 16 consecutive seasons (1983 to 1998), and the first to win five Super Bowls.
